The Shelter Buddies Reading Program is designed to help shelter dogs at the Humane Society of Missouri become more adoptable. Reading to the dogs helps to bring comfort and to reduce anxiety of shelter pets, and it nurtures empathy in children. The program is for kids ages 6-15 and is available at HSMO's Macklind Avenue Headquarters and at HSMO's Kuehner Center in Chesterfield Valley.
Cost is $5 per child, and participants are required to attend one, 90-minute training with a parent. Parents must accompany their child every time they come to read to the pets. Registration is required and spaces are limited.
