It’s hard to get kids excited about math when they only think of it in terms of worksheets and homework. But those calculations and algorithms power the things they love the most – from the video games they play to the digital music they listen to. Once they’re exposed to math in incredible, unconventional ways, they lose any fear they have and jump into the fun feet-first, ready to take on the world with all the exciting new things they’ve learned.

For many kids building friendships comes as naturally as breathing in air or waking up in the morning. For others, the process is filled with landmines of fear, anxiety and discouragement. Experts agree that friendship-building is a skill – it can be learned. And parents can help their kids develop the social skills that help make friendship building come more naturally.

Spring and summer breaks may seem far off in the future now, but for the past year, Parkway-Rockwood Community Ed has been planning the ultimate getaways for St. Louis area high school and middle school students with an adventurous streak.

Sometimes our little princesses just need to get muddy. To throw off that tutu and get some well-earned dirt under their nails and to kick off their heels and run barefoot through a creek. In this world, the frogs are for studying, not kissing. And a canopy of sun-kissed leaves stands in for castle turrets. In Forest Hymn for Little Girls, a new documentary to be filmed in St. Louis, Italian filmmaker Sara Bonaventura will show the magic that awaits when a group of girls are able to explore Missouri’s forests on their own.

At Rossman School, kids don’t just step into a classroom, they step into a family, where the students they sit next to six hours a day or see in the hallway aren’t just classmates, but true friends they can count on today and for years to come.

For the past year, the Thyvefil home in South St. Louis has been filled with the sound of music.

The memories made at summer camp last a lifetime – from meeting new friends to trying new sports to spending the afternoon playing in the sunshine.
