As the oldest of three girls, I’m no stranger to the rocky terrain of mother-daughter relationships. My sisters and I have always maintained a strong bond with our mom, but that’s not to say that we haven’t had our fair share of disagreements – and the occasional acts of teenage rebellion – over the years. Now that I’m a mother myself, though, I have to wonder how my own mom managed to keep her cool while raising three strong-willed and opinionated daughters into the women we are today. At not quite 12, my first and only daughter is already giving me a run for my money.

Girls and Engineering Workshop

This free workshop for mothers and daughters focuses on the need for female engineers and careers for women in engineering. It will be led by Donna Chapman, Business and Technology Specialist with the Rockwood School Districs as well as other Rockwood staff.

Girls and Engineering is part of the Rockwood Parent Series, free workshops designed to strengthen communities and offer expert information to parents.

Purposeful Parenting

Parents serve as developmental guides for their children. Each child is unique and brings along a profile of strengths, weaknesses and biologically driven inclinations to this relationship. Parents scramble, often unsuccessfully, to find the best way to help or guide their children. They can end up blamed - but not trained - for their child's behavior.

This free presentation will aid parents in decoding the messages behind a child's behavior, understanding how children really think and feel, and reducing the number of needless parent/child conflicts.

Child development researchers at Washington University School of Medicine are inviting 4-7-year-old children and a caregiver to participate in a study investigating what children know about suicide along with risk factors for experiencing suicidality early in life. We are seeking children who have and who have not experienced suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Children who participate will 1) answer brief questions about their understanding of suicide (we want to learn what children at different ages know, we do not teach them anything new), 2) play games, and 3) complete a safe and non-invasive EEG.
